Time Trials

If you want/ feel the need to measure your fitness over time, one way is to ride in Time Trials. You can ride the same course again and again and see as you get fitter the time get faster.

Equipment needed is any cycle, helmet and a rear light (the last two are advisory) .

During the summer local clubs run events on turn up and ride basis, most charge a fee of about £3 to £5 per event, The course number I.e. like P311 refer to measured courses, descriptions of the courses and some maps can be also found on the South District website. For most club event distance is normally ten miles, with a few up to twenty five miles.

Also clubs run open events which can attract riders from all over the country, distance can be from ten miles to fifty miles. To enter an open event you need to enter before the race normally eleven days, this can be done online on the website or old school post a paper form to the organiser (The form is on the Cycling Time Trials website). Entry fees are higher as normally cash prizes are awarded to the winners, and halls are used as HQ`s, for most the target is to beat previous time and other riders of like ability.

A trend in open events is to run two races, one for full on Time trial bikes and one for riders on normal road bikes.

For riders over forty the Veteran Time Trials Association have published standards for all standard distances and ages see HERE. Most opens give prizes to the rider who beat there standard by the greatest amount. The VTTA also give out medals at the end of the year to members who beat the standard times for each distance rode.
